Two people were killed on the west side of Washington in
windstorms Saturday. One was a 10-year old girl in Federal Way and the other
was a 38-year old man in Gig Harbor. Both were killed by falling trees and both
have not yet to have their names released. The goal of the story would be to
cover a record breaking windstorm, examine the sort of dangers it holds, and
then contrast with the issues going on within the state right now as well. Between
the issues with wildfires in central Washington and the low air quality in
eastern Washington, Washington State could be considered in a state of
emergency. Discussion of the long term issues that these wild weather patterns
could have, as well as the immediate damage that they create, could prove have
a good angle for a story.
The fact that there deaths involved in this also helps sell
the story, as it means that there will be public interest around the situation
already. A chance to talk to experts and gathering information about how common
these sorts of windstorms are, asking about why they happen and if this is a
sign of things to come. People during these time will naturally want more
information, and as such this would be a good point of time to jump in with
information for them.
